The American Welding Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1919 which boasts the latest resources for welders and other professionals worldwide.  Their goal is to, “advance the science, technology and application of welding and related joining disciplines.” The AWS has developed a set of welding codes that govern the welding structures such as buildings and bridges. If welding involves structural construction, designers use AWS structural codes. AWS D1.1 refers structural welding of steel, and AWS D1.3 refers to structural welding of sheet steel
